Johannes Wildner

Johannes Wildner studied conducting, violin, and musicology in Vienna and in Italy. His years of experience as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic had a lasting influence on his music-making.

He was the principal conductor of the Prague State Opera, the first permanent conductor of the Leipzig Opera and GMD of the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Westphalia, principal guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London.

Since 2008, he has conducted the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra in Vienna and on tours to Japan, China, Mexico, and Europe. From 2014-2022 he has been University Professor of Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and Artistic Director of the Festival Oper Burg Gars. Since 2019, he has been the principal conductor of the South Danish Symphony Orchestra.

His engagements take him worldwide to opera houses from Tokyo to the Arena di Verona, Bucharest, and Vilnius to Austria and Germany, as well as to orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Johannes Wildner has recorded more than 100 CDs, DVDs, and videos, including the integral versions of Johann Strauss’ “The Bat” and Mozart’s “Cosí fan tutte”, recordings of “Carmen” and “Le Nozze di Figaro”, Bruckner’s Third and Ninth Symphonies, as well as works by forgotten composers like D‘Erlanger and Braunfels with the BBC Concert Orchestra, and several CDs of previously unknown repertoire by Zeisl, Marx, and J.N.David with the ORF RSO Vienna
